Why We Built This

The doctors told me they caught it in time. My mother went through eleven months of treatment — brutal rounds, and she rebuilt herself after each one — and every test came back clear. I let myself breathe. Then, in the last three months of her life, it came back. Faster. More violent. I was called in to say goodbye before I understood what was happening. Everything had looked fine. Until it didn't.

Around the same time, someone else close to us was going through cancer. She had been through it before — treatment, hair loss, everything — and her doctors confirmed she was clear. She believed it was behind her. She was even the one who sat with my mother during treatment, because she knew what it felt like from the inside. Two years after my mother died, she was gone from the same disease. It had come back and spread quickly. By the time we understood how serious it was, there was nothing left to do.

Here As One was built in their memory. We don't talk about the pain easily — we carry it quietly. But writing does something that talking doesn't. This site is our version of that — a place to say what we can't say out loud, and where maybe someone else who carries it the same way can find something that makes it a little easier. We know there are people like us. People who don't share, don't speak, don't ask for help — but still need somewhere to put it. You don't have to talk to be here. You just have to read.
